Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc.

It can be especially useful for cases where:

you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.)
you need to work on a system that doesn’t have an OS installed
you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS
you want to run a low-level utility

Notes

  1. If you have an iso image just go to the lower part of rufus and select the iso, it will automagically set up the correct attributes in the boxes above.
  2. If you have an OS iso you can get you computer to come up with the bootable usb drive if you tap the F12 key on startup – its too late if the Windows start screen appears!. (often F8 is for BIOS, F9 for Windows recovery but you may need to play around on startup to figure out which is which)
